WKF 2026 competition rules: a class note from Kolhapur

The WKF 2026 competition rules reward a kata by votes, require awareness after a kumite technique, and treat a kick to a downed opponent as a foul. A class note for Kolhapur.

The WKF 2026 competition rules are the standard the World Karate Federation set for championships it promotes or recognises. A bulletin from December 2025, signed by Gunnar Nordahl of the WKF Rules and World Ranking Commission, says the revision took effect on 1 January 2026.

This note is for a reader in Kolhapur who also follows martial arts in India and abroad. Medal results from the world age-group championships in Bielsko-Biala are unconfirmed in the pages used here. So is any result for a student from Kolhapur.

Votes, not a points total, in kata

The bulletin says a kata bout or match is won by the number of votes. Each judge still uses points to choose a winner. Those points are not added across the panel.

Athletes are expected to announce the kata name so it can be recognised, and to use a correct kiai rather than a plain yell. Persistent, obvious theatrics can bring disqualification. The bulletin names stamping the feet, slapping the chest, the arms, or the karategi, and inappropriate exhalation.

The karategi must not be altered to change its shape. A starched ducktail or a puffed-up chest can be treated like any other attire fault. Prescription sport glasses are allowed in kata. Whether a grading in Kolhapur uses the vote, or allows those glasses, is unconfirmed.

Stay with the opponent after the technique

The bulletin calls one kumite change the most important. Only hand techniques are allowed towards a downed opponent. A kick to a downed opponent is a foul.

The kumite book, valid from 1 January 2026, notes text adjustments on 13 April 2026. It bans kicks against a downed opponent who is lying flat on the floor. It also gives an ippon for any legal technique when any part of the body other than the feet is on the mat, except hiza gamae, one knee on the mat during a technique. In class, a partner who is flat on the floor is not a target for a kick.

Article 8.5 still requires good form, a sporting attitude, vigorous application, awareness during and after the technique, good timing, and correct distance. Sporting attitude means delivery without intent to cause injury. Turning your back after the technique makes it invalid. Falling afterwards fails too, unless the opponent’s foul caused the fall. The bulletin says this awareness test had often been ignored.

Skin touch and the younger categories

Skin touch is allowed in all official kumite categories. The bulletin defines it as touching without transferring energy into the head or the helmet. Contact to the throat is not allowed.

The bulletin says athletes under 14 are still scored for hand techniques 5 cm short of the target and foot techniques 10 cm short, and that organisers must enforce the helmet. Article 8.8 also states general jodan distances beside skin touch: kicks within 5 cm, and hand techniques within 2 cm. For cadet and under-14 bouts it states 10 cm for kicks and 5 cm for hand techniques. Which distances a named Indian championship will print is unconfirmed here.

Jogai, and the three review buttons

Score and then leave the area, and the bulletin gives no jogai. If you are scored on while already out, jogai is not added to the point against you. A score followed by an exit before the referee calls yame stands. An unsuccessful attempt followed by an exit is jogai.

Where coaches have electronic buttons, video review is a choice of one score. The judge looks only for the score requested. The book names the three options:

  • Yuko, 1 point, for a tsuki or an uchi to a scoring area
  • Waza-ari, 2 points, for a chudan kick
  • Ippon, 3 points, for a jodan kick, or a legal technique when the opponent is down as Article 8.6 describes

The coach may change the level until the referee finishes the review signal. Article 14 requires video review at World Karate Federation world championships and at the Olympic Games, the Youth Olympic Games, and similar multisport games. Whether an open in Maharashtra has the buttons is unconfirmed.

What the October meetings were for

On 13 October 2026 the World Karate Federation held a coaches’ programme in Bielsko-Biala before the World Cadet, Junior and U21 Championships. Mohamed Elhosieny, chair of the technical commission, headed a review of the rules. Later that day more than 350 coaches met again, with Mohamed Elhosieny and organising commission chair Marton Falusi.

The federation said the championship, from 14 October 2026 to 18 October 2026, would bring together more than 2,000 athletes. That figure is the preview. A final attendance number is unconfirmed here.

On 14 October 2026 referees briefed in the same city. Javier Escalante coordinated, with Antonio Espinós, vice president Nasser Alrazooqi, and Polish Karate Union president Pawel Poltorzecki. Antonio Espinós said Javier Escalante had led refereeing for ten years.

A class habit for Kolhapur

Finish the technique and keep your face and chest toward your partner. A spin away fails the awareness test in the WKF 2026 competition rules. So does falling after a kick, unless the partner caused it with a foul. When a partner is flat on the floor, leave the kick out. Use a hand technique there only inside a drill the instructor has set.

For the head, stop at the distance they give you. Skin touch in the rule book is a competition term for a protected head, and the throat stays off limits. Keeping younger students short of the target is a training choice. It is not a medical claim. In kata, say the name so it can be recognised, and use a kiai that belongs to the movement. Whether the next grading in Kolhapur scores kata by votes is unconfirmed.

FAQs

01 Do these rules replace every class rule in Kolhapur?

The kumite book says it standardises championships of the World Karate Federation, its continental federations, and its member national federations. Whether SK Martial Arts uses each line in a regular class is unconfirmed.

02 Can a younger athlete aim for skin touch to the head?

The bulletin allows skin touch in all official categories, and it still scores under-14 hand techniques at 5 cm short and foot techniques at 10 cm short, with a helmet required. Throat contact is not allowed. What a child’s class in Kolhapur permits is unconfirmed until the instructor says so.

03 Where are these rules in use next?

The calendar lists the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar from 31 October 2026 to 13 November 2026, the Commonwealth Championships in Glasgow on 5 November 2026 and 6 November 2026, and the Karate World Cup in Hangzhou from 20 November 2026 to 22 November 2026. Results and Indian entries for those events are unconfirmed here.
